A charitable foundation, The Northern Rock Foundation, was established under the terms of Northern Rock's conversion from a building society to a plc in 1997. The Foundation has as its primary objective helping to improve the conditions of people disadvantaged by age, infirmity, poverty or other circumstances.
In February 2008, Northern Rock was taken into temporary public ownership and the company was later restructured into two separate companies, Northern Rock plc and Northern Rock (Asset Management) plc. The Northern Rock Foundation is now funded by both Northern Rock plc and Northern Rock (Asset Management) plc, and has been guaranteed a minimum income of £15 million in 2010.
